Increasingly residents have been raising concerns about planning decisions in Fitzroy.
People increasingly feel frustrated and powerless in face of Council bureaucracy. Some specific issues include:
* lack of transparency in how decisions are made. There is no heritage department in the Yarra Council.
* bewildering procedures for objections. Residents are invited into an application’s review only near the end of the process.
* a planning process remote from residents.
* Council seeming to be in opposition to residents rather than a support and resource.
The FRA is seeking examples of residents’ experience with planning and development matters.
The FRA is prepared to support residents objecting to inappropriate development.
Our most successful strategy is to unite residents surrouding each proposed development so that they can work together and support eachother.

My personal experience as a resident was as follows: the previous owners of my property had put plans into council, which, when I found them, had expired but which were approved by council. I re-submitted these same approved plans myself, and it took over 1 year to have these previously approved plans re-approved, despite them being 100% the same as when approved earlier. My son recently emailed that he has now studied for 2 semesters & visted 16 Eastern European countries in the same time it took Yarra Council to have his room’s plans stamped. Why so long?
Welcome to typical bureaucratic ineptitude and subsequent delay.. certainly not unique to the Yarra Council.
Residents in the Spring,Rose and Kerr Streets area would be grateful for any assistance from other residents in commenting on the massive development complex planned there by Premier Developments. (73 apartments plus pool; 6 storeys plus 2 levels of parking). All will overshadow and overlook neighbours including Rose Street market. There’s an opportunity now to lodge objections with VCAT – til 12th June 2012.
It’d be great if anyone can come to the VCAT hearing from 9 July 2012, 10am 55 King Street, Melb. Ref. P865/2012.
